Best Travel Tips & Resources
The best travel tips & resources section is for those times when you just want to get out of town, or you want to make your tours around town a little more convenient. (As much as I love Kansas City, there are times when even I feel the need to explore further and wider.) As I tour my town, bookstores and the internet, I’m occasionally offered, directed to, or otherwise stumble upon some really great travel resources. As this occurs, I’ll be listing them here. My favorites: This first site is absolutely fantastic if you’re a spur of the moment type (shhh, don’t tell anyone, but they have a lot of great ideas even if you’re planning your trip well in advance). One of my favorite tips, as we go into warmer months, is when you are out and about touring our town always keep a small cooler in your car. You never know when you're going to have a doggie bag from some fantastic joint you just discovered. Or, when you might discover the most yummy gourmet shop, bakery or chocolatier. Throw one of those reusable cold packs in and your goodies will still be prime when you return home!
Another travel tip for the summer into fall: As you venture out into the country side, remember to carry a little bit of cash. Not every mom & pop roadside produce stand is going to have a credit card machine. Also, for U-Pick It produce stops, impromptu picnics, etc. don't forget to pack bug spray and sunscreen. We actually leave both items in the car. Due to temperature extremes in Kansas City weather, I suggest non-aerosol varieties.
Another item we tend to leave in the car is a lightweight blanket. I really like the ones that roll up and have the webbed straps and handle. They don't take up much space and they are easy to carry. A recent AUGUST evening at Starlight proved that there is no such thing as normal in Kansas City weather--darling daughter would have froze, had we not taken one along.
