Kansas City Day Trips

Kansas City day trips are awesome. I love taking the time to get out and see our surrounding areas.

In the past, we’ve been known to get out and drive without any real destination in mind. Sometimes we would run across some little hidden gem of a place, and sometimes not, so it would turn out to be just a nice drive.

With the price of gas the way it is, we’ve taken to doing a little more planning, thus taking fewer “nice drives”. I’ll help you by giving you ideas of places to go and things to see, regardless of the direction you want to go. Heading north can take you to scenic Amish country, on the Missouri side, with their antiques, handmade goods and bakeries. You can water ski or snow ski. In one community you can learn to swirl and sniff or slam it. On the Kansas side you can check out a fort, see painted ponies, a historic wall, a place that inspires women to spread their wings and inspires the traveler in all of us to hit the rails.

To the East, Missouri offers Civil War and African American history in Arrow Rock.

More Civil War history, including the site of one of the first land battles of the war, along with ancient Indian burial mounds and scenic trails can be found in Boonville.

Rocheport is wine country, and was named "One of America's 10 Coolest Small Towns" by Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine and by ME.

There’s also a refuge in Columbia for thousands of wild tigers right in the heartland of America. As a young woman, I lived there, working, studying and becoming one with these magnificent creatures.

To the west into Kansas there are historical sites, authentic main streets, an institute of politics, someone to make you some new marbles in case you’ve lost yours, a Native American University and exhibits, and the gateway to the old west. Ride’em cowboy!

Kansas City day trips to the Southwest take you to the beautiful Flint Hills and to a monthly must do for motorcyclists from all around. Just ask my husband!

Southeast leads you gently into Missouri lake country, and a place (with a nod to my friend Sher) where doe-eyed children never grow old.
