Coming Soon AMC Mainstreet 6!
AMC Mainstreet 6
Opening Spring of 2009 at the corner of 14th and Main, in the Power and Light District. Like everything in the Kansas City Power and Light District, this is going to be the hottest ticket around. This will be a venue for adults; no one under 18 will be allowed in the regular auditoriums without a parent or guardian, and no one under 21 will be allowed in the “Cinema Suites”. A restaurant and lounge will make it a total “dinner and a movie” experience. Check out the link above for complete info on all the over the top amenities they will be offering. I can’t wait to check it out! For now, this is the only "Kansas City Movie Theaters Coming Soon" that I'm aware of. If you know of any others on the cinematic horizon, drop me a line on the "contact me" page.
It's Open! Here's the review:
Okay, the AMC Mainstreet 6 is open for business. My daughter and I headed down for a recent Friday matinee to check it out for you.

The AMC Mainstreet 6 is a really beautiful theater. The restoration was well done. The first thing that catches your eye is the sculptural chandelier in the front lobby/rotunda.

To your right is the bar and restaurant area. Visually it's upscale, but inviting. While my picture doesn't really capture them, there were several diners, that appeared to be from area businesses, having lunch.

We just grabbed a snack from the concession area. It was a nice twist to see beer and wine choices, along with healthy food options, on the same menu board as popcorn and Milkduds. We opted for sodas and popcorn because we were excited about the prospect of the flavor and toppings station. Maybe we shouldn't have went to the first show of the day... The young man at the counter hadn't been trained completely and had some struggles with ringing up our order. We had two small sodas, two small popcorns and a box of Milkduds (I had a dollar off coupon for the candy with my tickets, because I used my Movie Watcher card.) I didn't think it would require going back to someone in the "kitchen" area twice. We then headed over to the popcorn toppings. I should have paid attention, as what we were attempting to top was what appeared to be the leftover crumbs from the night before's popcorn--it wasn't even warm. My daughter wanted the parmesan, and I wanted the cheddar. The cheddar was empty, so we both opted for the parmesan topping. It should read "GARLIC parmesan" topping. I love garlic, but holy cow! Not a good option if you're there on a date... We headed to the ticket taker to get our 3-D glasses. Sort of weird to go see a "kids'" movie in what is a theater designed for adults. Anyway, the auditoriums of the AMC Mainstreet 6 are intimate and have wonderful plush leather seating. Awesome! For once, I didn't have to wonder if there was anything crawling or greasy on the fabric headrest from the previous seatholder!!! My joy in the cleanliness and comfort of the theater, along with that of several other patrons, was short lived. We came to see a movie, not round after round of the trivia and trailers. After listening to the low grumble of unhappy parents starting to swell, I got up and went to the lobby to find out why our movie hadn't started, even though it was supposed to have a good fifteen minutes earlier. The ticket taker radioed someone, in what I suppose was the control room. They told her it would begin shortly. It was left to me to go back into the auditorium and tell the patrons what little information I had. No, I'm not that person that would just walk in and start addressing everyone. A lady that was across the way must have watched me go and come back, because as soon as I returned, she hollared across the room asking if I had found out anything. I really think an announcement should have been made by the management. An apology for the delay would have been appropriate, too, as it was at least another ten minutes before our film started. However, we never saw a soul. So, my question to myself is, "Is the atmosphere and amenities of the AMC Mainstreet 6 worth the $13.00 matinee ticket price?" Nope, not even close. However, if you're going to the AMC Mainstreet 6 on a date night and you choose the “Cinema Suites” at $20.00 a ticket, which includes a $10.00 dining voucher, you might be getting a little better value for your money. Just remember to call the babysitter, because you're not taking the kids in with you. To wrap up this review, especially being that the AMC Mainstreet 6 is just down the street from AMC's corporate offices, I think they need to step it up. If you're asking guests to literally buy into the "quality" experience, then you better provide it from top to bottom. I give it two Milkduds out of five.
